Psoriasis Treatment
There are many different treatments available to help control psoriasis. Some psoriasis treatments can be
found over the counter at a drugstore, while others require a prescription from your doctor or dermatologist.
A treatment which works for someone may not work for another. The goal is to find a treatment that works the
best with the least side effects. Your doctor will look at the type of psoriasis you have and recommend the
treatment regimen that is best for you.

Aim of Psoriasis Treatment
A wide choice of treatment is available to help clear if not control and improve psoriasis. The aim
of psoriasis treatment include:
- Reduce the disease extent of psoriasis
- Control of the symptoms of itch, scaling and joint pains
- Remission - clearing the skin of psoriasis patches
- Prevention of complications like erythrodermic or generalized psoriasis, joint deformities
- Minimize or eliminate the negative psychosocial impact of psoriasis
- Prevention of recurrence
It is important to define the aims of treatments when starting and to reviewand monitor the results or response
to the therapy used.
The clinical features of psoriasis can be correlated to the presence of inflammatory cells (immune or white
blood cells) in the upper part of the skin which release certain chemicals (cytokine) which stimulate the epidermal
cells of the skin to multiply rapidly resulting in the overproduction of scales.
The various modalities of treatment work for suppressing and eliminating the activity of the immune cells.
Choice of Treatment in Psoriasis
The treatment of psoriasis can be divided into topical therapy (creams and ointment), phototherapy, and
systemic therapy (oral medications). The choice of therapy is determined by the following factors.
- Severity of psoriasis, extent, disability, distress to patient, rate of spreading
- Clinical type of psoriasis
- Age, sex and reproductive needs
- Area of body affected by psoriasis
- Any other associated medical problems in the patient
- Tolerance of the previous response to treatment
- Ability to comply; personality and needs; cost; social support

The choice of the methods of therapy in psoriasis has to be individualized. Most patients are treated with a
combination of treatments. Not all treatments are effective or all people with psoriasis.
Psoriasis treatment that did not work before may work better in combination with another modality. The
treatment may need to be changed if response is poor.
Treatment for clearing the psoriasis (clearance phase of establishing remission) often differs from the ones for
maintaining the remission/maintenance phase. The dermatologist may want to rotate the treatments to avoid or
minimize the unwanted effects of long term therapy with one treatment method.
